History & Role in Civil Society
In 1958, a group of fifteen committed women representing different professions and civic concerns agreed to form themselves as an association known as the “Women’s Rights Movement of the Philippines” (WRMP). These women, aware of the subdued position of many women in the Philippines society, thought that the situation could be improved if women were made conscious of their civil and political rights and if they can project effectively their equal status with the male not only in the homes but mostly in the places of work. Women needed a stronger voice in order to be better heard and be respected in their professional rights. This core group of committed women knew that they must initiate the task of educating women to develop in themselves self-confidence to be able to claim their rightful places of equal status where ever they are situated. Thus, the WRMP was born and the women innovators proceeded with their task of harnessing their own talents to help other women from all walks of life.
