After two successful terms in office, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has ceased to be the executive director of UN Women on August 17, 2021.
As a long-time advocate of women’s rights, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was devoted to education, the empowerment of women and gender equality. Under her leadership, UN Women became significantly more influential within and outside the UN system, expanded partnerships, was more effective and significantly larger in terms of size and revenue.
IAW says goodbye and wishes Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka continued success and luck, both professionally and privately.
Ms. Pramila Patten, Under Secretary General of the UN, takes over the position on an interim basis until the subsequent Executive Director is elected. The transition between the leading positions coincides with the Afghanistan crisis. The new Executive Director will face a tremendous challenge right from the beginning.
On behalf of all women around the globe, we wish that she will have an impact on the positive development of the current dramatic events in the world in relation to women’s issues.
